I don't know if this is the correct way but it is what I did and worked well with out melting the candy too much.
Make your favorite sugar cookie dough.
Roll dough into a log and chill for at least 30 minutes.
Slice dough 1/4 slices and place on baking sheet.
Bake you favorite sugar cookie 7-8 minutes, pull out of the oven place candy of choice in cookie.
Place back in oven for 1-2 minutes.
Cool on rack.
